Seth Nehil [b. 1973] began experimenting with sound in the late 1980’s and released his first album, Tracing the Skins of Clouds, in 1998. Connecting with the experimental music magazine N D, in Austin TX, he first collaborated with sound artists like John Grzinich and Olivia Block. Early work focused on natural acoustics and the layering of site-based improvisations, field recordings and vocal patterns. Since then, he has released numerous solo and collaborative albums on labels internationally.
Seth Nehil received an MFA in Music/Sound at Bard College, where he was deeply influenced by the ideas of Maryanne Amacher, including the architectural placement of speakers and extended possibilities of duration. Continued areas of interest include site-specific sound, audiovisual interactions, psychoacoustics, generative composition, and the ambiguity of sonic narrative. Recent work has utilized various forms of synthesis and multichannel listening to create environments and immersive experiences.
Living in Portland, OR, Seth Nehil composes scores for installations, film, dance and performance, and continues to release music. He teaches classes in sound, music and video production at the Pacific NW College of Art and operates the video production company Paradise Meow. He is also an avid gardener and is certified in Permaculture design.
